BRAZIL-Just an observation

Memories

Every large multinational corporation that I have been privileged to work with or for during my unfortunately loooong and fortunately continuing career offers an “orientation” program for new entrants.

Various departments tell the program participants what they do and how they do it.

One session usually involves someone from accounting or Treasury to explain financial policies and practices. Equally common in that session is the time-worn anecdote about how the company chose its auditors. The speaker explains that 3 auditing companies were interviewed and each was asked what is the result of 2+2. The first two companies were reported to have said the result was 4. The third asked the interviewer just what number he had in mind. The third company was selected. Everyone with a three-digit IQ laughed.

It would appear, however, that the current administration of Brazil must have chosen the third company on the assumption that it was serious!

I find it beyond belief that after 5 years of failed policy initiatives, the administration is able to ignore the results of its “management” of the economy and continues to adhere to the same approaches.

The situation reminds me of a comment of a Mafia boss in the US who when commenting on the “management ability” of a rival mob family said: “Dose guys couldn’t organize a one-car funeral procession!”

Of course, if it is all on purpose, it’s a most effective plan!
